Digidesign Pro Tools 8 Pricing and Availability

Pro Tools 8 is coming and it looks awesome! How much will it cost? When can you get it? Where? What about compatibility?

Pro Tools 8: When?

Digidesign have announced a release date of “mid-Q4 2008” and “late 2008”. So, if everything goes according to plan, you should be able to get Pro Tools 8 in November/December.

This is information I’ve gathered from Digidesign press releases, from Digidesign.com and from speaking to one of the Digidesign Sales Managers. But as usual – things can change at the last minute. So, please use the Digidesign website for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding your purchase of Pro Tools 8.

Buying Pro Tools 8

The upgrade path is simple: you’ll be able to upgrade from any previous version of Pro Tools to Pro Tools 8.

Upgrade Prices

If you already own a Pro Tools system, you can Pre-Order a Pro Tools 8 upgrade today through your preferred Digidesign dealer. The going street prices (USD) are as follows:

  • Pro Tools HD 8 Upgrade boxed Version $249.95
  • Pro Tools LE 8 Upgrade boxed version $149.95
  • Pro Tools M-Powered 8 Upgrade boxed version $149.95

If you currently run a version of Pro Tools lower than 7.4.

If you have a Pro Tools system and are still running a version earlier that 7.4, you can still purchase and download the upgrade to Pro Tools 7.4 from Digidesign’s Amazon. If you do this, you’ll automatically be eligible to receive a FREE upgrade to the brand-new Pro Tools 8 when it ships.

  • Pro Tools HD 7.4 UPG (with free Pro Tools 8 upgrade) Download Version $249.95
  • Pro Tools LE 7.4 UPG (with free Pro Tools 8 upgrade) Download Version$149.95
  • Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 UPG (with free Pro Tools 8 upgrade) Download Version$149.95

If you do not currently own a Pro Tools system.

If you purchase and register any new Pro Tools system that comes with a previous version of Pro Tools between now and the release of Pro Tools 8, you’re entitled to receive a free upgrade to Pro Tools 8 when it ships.  I’m not sure yet if this will be via download or shippable box.

As they’ve done in the past, Digidesign will probably send out an email to qualified customers with instructions for downloading the free upgrade.

If you go this route, remember – you must register and activate your Pro Tools 7.4 purchase to qualify for a free upgrade to Pro Tools 8.

Pro Tools 8: Where to get it

Retail

Pro Tools 8 will be available as an over-the-shelf, boxed upgrade in limited quantities at your local authorized Digidesign dealer. “Check in-store for details.”

DigiStore

The Store at Digidesign is currently selling 7.4 Upgrades which will include a free upgrade to Pro Tools 8, once it becomes available. I think it’s also pretty safe to say that Pro Tools 8 Upgrades will be available for purchase and download at the Digistore once it’s released.

Online:

Several online dealers are taking pre-orders for Pro Tools 8 right now. If I had to pick an online dealer for PT8 today, it would be AudioMIDI. They seem to be on top of it.

will it be compatible with profire 610 because 7.4 is not i need to know because it kinda shut me down for a sec or should i go back to cubase or albeton live i use all of them really i like protools but when i bought this m audio money spent for nothing
should stuck with ssl and the
    racks

  2. Is there going to be a discount for ppl who bought 7.4……Does not seem fair that if you stay current and loyal to PT that they just leave you out like that.

  3. Dangerousbeats ~ I haven’t tried it myself (the Profire with 7.4). Keep your eyes on the Digidesign compatibility pages for the most current information.

Eric~ Digi is offering PT8 for free to anyone who bought 7.x after October 3rd. The rest of us have to pay. Personally, I don’t mind paying $149.00 for the upgrade. I just hope they test it and write it well the first time around so it is truly worthy of being a paid upgrade.
